Can older iPhones be upgraded to the iOS 4?

I believe that the iPhone 3GS can be upgraded to the iOS 4 and be able to take full advantage of all of its features, including multi-tasking. What I am not certain about is if the iPhone 3G or older models can be upgraded to this new operating system. Additionally, if they can be upgraded, will they be able to use the full functionality of the iOS 4 or would they have limited functionality.

The iOS 4 update is compatible with the iPhone 3GS and 3G models. It can also be installed on the iTouch second and third generations, however, you should keep in mind that features such as mutli-tasking and wallpaper support are only enabled when it is installed in the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iTouch third-generation models.

Likewise, if you intend to install the iOS 4 on one of the older iPhone models keep in mind, as @edwardclint stated in his response, that battery drain is a real issue. Also, if you install the iOS 4 update on many of the older models and you are not satisfied with any aspect of its performance, Apple does not offer a rollback mechanism, so you would not be able to return to the previous version of iPhone operating system.

For some, the iOS 4 is probably best left for use on the device that it was specifically designed for, the iPhone 4.
