The consensus is that divorce is bad for heart health, but statistics show that, in fact, women, not men, are at greater risk. One study by the University of Texas involving 9,500 people found that by the age of 60, 33 per cent of divorced women are predicted to have cardiovascular disease, compared to 21.5 per cent of continuously married women.

But just 37.5 per cent of divorced men are predicted to be affected by the disease compared to 31.7 per cent of married men.
Professor Mark Hayward, who led the research, believes women could be more vulnerable during the years that divorce often happens, from the 40s and onwards.
That’s because it’s around about the same time women’s levels of heart-protective oestrogen drop.
